The Unity, the last high-tech nation, has made itself a utopia, graciously giving to its people full employment, free healthcare, computerless surfing of the nationwide CORE computer, rec drugs at quite reasonable prices, and retirement at forty.
In 2128, MALILA CHIU, an army officer and thus a member of the ruling class, is a middle-aged (17 years old) officer well on her way to high command.
For her sins, both real and manufactured, she is sent to repair a sniffer-station in the hideous outlands. All goes well until she awakes to find herself under the knife of an impossibly old, disfigured, savage, but also middle-aged poet-savage, who claims to be seventy-six.
